Kundalu, which released in theatres yesterday, marks a historic moment for Gujarati cinema. Written and directed by Rohit Prajapati, the film is the first-ever Gujarati feature created entirely in the authentic Mehsani dialect. With English subtitles accompanying the narrative, Kundalu bridges local storytelling with global accessibility, offering audiences a heartfelt experience that is deeply rooted in North Gujarat’s culture.

Set in the rustic villages of Mehsana district, the film brings to life an emotional tale that reflects both the tenderness and the turbulence of rural relationships. At the centre of this narrative is Mangu, an orphaned young woman shaped by societal constraints, and Vikas, a spirited young man whose speech impediment drives him further into isolation. Their encounter blooms into a fragile bond—one that is quickly threatened by long-standing patriarchal expectations where marriage and reputation overshadow personal happiness.

Kundalu shines a spotlight on characters often overlooked: those burdened by silence, rejection, and rigid social traditions. The album features an impressive lineup of singers, including Bhumi Trivedi, Jay Mohan, Tripti Gadhvi, Tripti Chaudhary, Parthi Vyas, and Richa Barot. Songs such as “Harkhato Malkato,” “Kaydamam Rahevu,” “Chadh Ladi Chadh,” “Pankhida Tara Pagale,” and “Rupiyani Rani” each stand out as narrative pillars rather than mere musical interludes.

Visually, the film boasts award-winning cinematography that captures both the serene beauty and the social complexities of village life. Even before its theatrical release, Kundalu earned major recognition at the Jaipur International Film Festival (JIFF-2024). Produced by Suchitra, Neena, and Priya under 3 Peepul Productions, the film won seven accolades, including Best Music, Best Cinematography, Best Sound and Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and the Green Rose Award for environmental sensitivity.
